Hi! My name is Meerae and I am the founder of FCT! I graduated in 2019 with an ATAR of 96 and was able to achieve a score of 96 for Legal Studies. My other subjects included English Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2, Mathematics Advanced and Extension 1 and Economics. Currently, I am studying a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Sydney as a Dalyell Scholar.
Throughout my HSC experience, I was changing tutors almost every term. I found that no tutor understood the new syllabus properly and never had enough benefits that justified their price. That is how First Choice Tutoring was born, I brainstormed everything I wish a tutoring company had to solve every problem that arises during the HSC and put them together to form FCT. With only new syllabus resources, and new syllabus tutors, I aimed to create a safe space where students studying the new syllabus would be able to collaborate with their peers and excel. I aimed to create an environment where tutoring no longer felt like a burden, but a fun space where students could come to relax and chat with their mentors, who slowly become their friends throughout the year.
I started mentoring early in High School, and loved the feeling I got when one of my students had an ‘aha’ moment when a student finally understands a concept, it is this feeling which gravitated me to the art of teaching. Through the making of resources and collaborating with my other tutors, I am proud of what FCT has come to be; a safe place for young people to help young people. At the beginning of High School, I remember my math teacher telling my mum that I would never succeed in life if it involved maths. I was almost failing throughout my early High School years, and began to push when I had a math teacher that believed in me. Through this belief, I managed to band 6 Mathematics Advanced in year 11, when I was only 16. I will never underestimate the power of a good mentor who can help a student strive to do their very best, and that is what the tutors and I at FCT aim to do.
We know what it is like to perform less than desirably in an exam, but we also know how to bounce back from these marks and perform even better the next round. In 2020, I worked closely with one of my students and lifted them up from a 40% in their first task (before they began tuition with me) to 100% in their second task. Seeing that rise in confidence throughout the year made me so proud and is what I love the most about being a mentor to our students.
At FCT we build personal connections because it is the only way to ensure our students can perform successfully during their HSC year. We work closely, not only with our students, but their families as well as we aim to build a community where everyone is able to support each other. So what are you waiting for?
